76 Trombones??? No 76 Vocabulary Cards!!

I know I’m showing my age, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind thinking of 76 Vocabulary Cards.

For those that are lost and wondering what is she talking about?? “Google it” like my 6 year old niece always suggests to me. Hint: a song from a musical.

I am highlighting the 8 components of this product for E. Carle’s A House for Hermit Crab in separate blog posts, instead of a massive post explaining each section. You have found #1 of 8 of the components which is Vocabulary Cards. You can see a quick Preview and descriptions at the Etsy Shop or TeachersPayTeachers .

Math TEKS

Since Texas is my home base, I always have the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) running through my creative process. If they aren’t your priority, I hope these Math TEKS easily correspond with your state’s/country’s standards.

The Vocabulary Cards

Printing the Cards

Your first choice is to print one slide per page. A second choice is to shrink them about 40% or choose the “two slides per page” options in the printing directions.
There are two Versions of the Vocabulary Cards: Color clipart for 44 cards. Grayscale clipart for 44 cards.

How to Use the Cards

I typically print one slide per page which gives me four words per page. I feel that the font size and card size are good for Word Wall displaying. In addition, it is a great size for the kiddos to use at a workstation activities i.e. using a pocket chart for retelling the story.

Thirdly, the kiddos can use the vocabulary cards to increase numeracy vocabulary as you introduce the activities.
The main thing is to discuss the vocabulary cards and have them in view of the kiddos for reference.

When I didn’t have wall space, I would glue the words onto chart paper, bulletin board paper, or even construction paper!

Important role of Vocabulary Cards for Math Journal Entries:

Can your kiddos verbally tell you what they did during the Math activity? Can they tell you what their thoughts were doing the activity? Not just give a response, but know and tell “how” they came to that response. Presto!!! That’s how the Vocabulary Cards save the day! The kiddos need words to explain their actions. If you take the time to make an anchor chart of sample phrases to describe their thinking, focusing on the Vocabulary Cards as a resource, you’ll be so glad you did. If the kiddos can’t “tell” you orally, then don’t waste your time asking them to write or draw about their thinking in their Math Journals.
