Everyone needs kindness! There is an historical figure who knew that fact and practiced it his entire life. That would be John Chapman! But, you may know him as “Johnny Appleseed”.

Country’s Kindness Background
“Everyone needs kindness” was not a virtue during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, when we became a new country. Well, it was new to some people. Native American Indian tribes were already living on the land that would become the United States of America. People from Europe were coming to this “new land” and making homesteads in the states of Massachusetts and New York. Additionally in eleven other states, that were the “13 Original Colonies”. Those who came were referred to as “pioneers” or “settlers”. Some of them were not kind to the Indian tribes that were already living here, but John Chapman was different. He wholeheartedly believed that “everyone needs kindness”. He showed respect for the Indian people and learned how to live off the land from them. There weren’t grocery stores back then.
Johnny’s Life of Kindness
Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 26, 1774. His real name was John Chapman, but his nickname was Johnny Appleseed because of his love for growing apple trees. He showed kindness to the people who were moving west into the wilderness. Johnny grew trees and supplied apple seeds to the pioneers settling in parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He traveled “light”, hence the pot on his head. 😉
