Math TEKS for Subitizing with Hermit Crab

Since Texas is my home base, I always have the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) running through my creative process. If they aren’t your priority, I hope these Math TEKS easily correspond with your state’s/country’s standards.

The Goal of the activity is to aid in developing the ability to rapidly, accurately, and confidentially identify a group of objects, without having to count each object in the group. This is the foundation for being able to compose and decompose numbers to 10.

For Subitizing with Your Kiddos and Hermit Crab

The characters, Hermit Crab and Starfish, plus a new friend :), a Scuba Penguin are in various arrangements for quantities 1-10. Additionally, there are Ten Frames with dots in traditional AND nontraditional arrangements.

I recently read that having the Ten Frame boxes connected in PreK-1st grade instruction has cause confusion for kiddos later in 3rd-4th grade in creating fractional parts of shapes. Have you heard that or experienced it as a 3rd-4th grade Educator? Let me know!

There are 48 cards in color and 48 cards in grayscale. Secondly, there blank templates for kiddos to design their own cards.

Printing / Cutting Tips for Subitizing with Hermit Crab

You can print 1 slide per paper yielding you 2 cards, which could be the “Teacher Cards” to used in a large group. Save yourself from future headaches, cover the cards in clear contact paper or laminate them. Then, put the cards on a ring and have them handy for quick review. You know for those minutes when you’re waiting for kiddos slowly joining the line or coming to the carpet. For cards to use in small group, I preferred printing 2 slides per page which yielded 4 cards. The grayscale cards I copied on colored cardstock for variety.

I trimmed cards to width 4 ¾ inches x height 3 inches.

Since every printer dialogue box is different, you may want to be mindful of extra choices you have to make. If you choose the option to print 2 slides per page, be careful to read all the “Print Handout” options. I needed to uncheck having the slide number and frames. I kept “scale to paper”.
